Message for the HIghland PTO President...

November 29, 2011

Dear Highland family,

Thank you so much for all of you who have donated to the PTO’s Giving Campaign.  We have
surpassed the 50% mark for participation! This means that we have succeeded in meeting Mike Kane’s
challenge, which will ensure us an extra $1,000.  To date we are at 52% participation.

I would like to let you know about something that just came to my attention.  I want to share
with you that many of our very own teachers and Highland staff, including many who do not have
children currently attending Highland, have contributed to the Giving Campaign.  I don’t know about
you, but I am amazed at the commitment that they are showing.  Not only are they spending their time
and energy in providing our children with the best education possible but they are also willing to help
pay for it.  Please, if you have not done so in a while, take few minutes to thank our teachers and let
them know how much they are appreciated.

Also a donation was made by three students who donated $ 13.75 that they have raised by
selling friendship bracelets.  This goes to show how much our own students care about their school,
their teachers, and their education.  Good job!!

Lastly, I would like to share with you that to date we have received $36,953.75 ($37953.75
including Mike Kane’s challenge).  This is fantastic!!! And I want to, again, thank all of you that not only
have contributed but also have contacted businesses,  friends, and family who were willing to donate.
As you know, our goal is still $60,000.  For those who have NOT yet donated, there is still time.  Please
consider any amount.  It will make a great difference.  Also keep in mind that you do not have to pay
your entire amount in one lump sum.  Just pledge now and make payments as it is convenient for you.

The PTO Board will meet on December 7 to start the painful process of cutting the budget, since
at this time we cannot predict whether future fundraisers are going to be successful. Our plan is to cut
any programs and/or funding that can’t be covered by the money received so far during the Giving
Campaign.  We will present the revised budget at the January PTO meeting.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message and thank you for all that you bring to our
school.  I am honored to consider myself part of the Highland family.

Valentina Muggia
PTO President, 2011-2012

Back-To-School Assembly

09/07/2011 - Highland Elementary - As the new school year began and teachers welcomed their students to another exciting school year at Highland, Principal Dean and Highland Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) President Valentina Muggia welcomed parents back to another year in a Back-To-School parent assembly.
After a brief speach by Muggia talking about the PTO, Principal Dean continued the assembly by giving a presentation about state benchmarks and how they compared to district scores and how consistentantly Highland students exceeded both, and how the parents of Highland make this happen.  Dean showed a presentation of these statistics and how PTO money was distributed through the school year. Dean has shared this presentation to post on the Highland PTO Website so other parents, who did not make the assembly, could see how your contributions to the PTO make a difference.

Click here to view or download the presentation '2011_09_07 Principal Dean Presentation 1st Day.pdf' on the 'Misc Documents' page.

Scoop on School Supplies

According to a district policy, schools cannot ask for fees for supplies. Yet many parents and teachers have found this to be easier. Thanks to a brilliant idea from a parent, the PTO has found a way to keep the tradition alive.  You can write a check for $25 to the Highland PTO and we will reimburse teachers for supplies they purchase.  If you have already purchased your supplies based on previously posted lists, no worries--simply bring them to your child's classroom at the Open House/Ice Cream Social OR on the first day of school. We will also be exploring a way to purchase supplies in bulk in the future—saving everyone time and money. Should you have any questions please contact the PTO board. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused and appreciate your patience as we work out the best way to keep our classrooms stocked
